Client-Provided Keepsakes vs. Studio-Sourced Keepsakes: How Custom Engraving Works at Heirloom Ink Studio

If you’ve been considering a custom engraved piece, one question tends to come up right away:

Will I need to send something in, or is the item provided?

The answer is, both options are available.

Most clients choose to send a piece they’ve already selected. Others prefer to have something sourced or chosen from a small selection of items available in the studio.

Here’s how each option works, and how to decide what’s best for you.

Client-Provided Keepsakes, The Most Common Approach

In most cases, clients send their items to the studio for engraving.

These are often pieces that already hold meaning, a favorite fragrance, a gift chosen for someone special, or a detail tied to a wedding or milestone moment.

Some of the most commonly engraved client-provided items include:

  • Perfume bottles from brands like Chanel, Dior, and YSL

  • Wedding cake cutting sets

  • Branded compact mirrors

  • Lipsticks and small beauty keepsakes

With this approach, you select the items and send them to me to be personalized through engraving.

Studio-Sourced Keepsakes, A Curated Selection

For those who prefer not to source an item themselves, a small selection of keepsakes is available in the studio.

These are unbranded pieces chosen specifically for engraving, with an emphasis on simplicity, versatility, and clean finishes.

The studio selection may include:

  • Compact mirrors in select styles

  • Hair combs and claw clips

  • Refillable travel-size perfume bottles

Availability is limited, and styles may change over time. This option is ideal if you would prefer a ready-to-personalize piece without sourcing it yourself.

Sourcing Select Items, When Timing Matters

In some cases, specific items can be sourced on your behalf.

This is most often requested for branded pieces, such as a particular perfume or lipstick, especially when time is limited.

If the item is available locally and my studio schedule allows, it can be sourced as part of a concierge-style service.

Sourced items are billed at the cost of the item, along with applicable taxes and a sourcing fee.

If you would like to request this option, you can note it when submitting your inquiry.

How to Decide Which Option Is Right for You

If you already have a specific item in mind, especially a designer piece or something tied to a meaningful moment, sending it in is typically the best option.

If you prefer something simple, refined, and ready to personalize, a studio-sourced piece may be a better fit.

In either case, the process is guided from start to finish, with careful attention to detail at every step.

A Thoughtful, Guided Process

Whether a piece is client-provided or sourced through the studio, each one is handled with care and intention.

The goal is always the same, to create something personal, lasting, and meaningful.
